On September 29, before a select occurrence, the crowning ceremony for “Miss Nuestra Comunidad” took place in El Paso Texas. At the event, recognition awards were also given to the sponsors and to the people that have supported the magazine through out its career. Proclamations were also read by the mayors of El Paso and Oklahoma City declaring September 29 as the “Nuestra Comunidad Day”.

The selection of the queens took place on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 through judges who took spiritual beauty, talent, maturity, ability to succeed, moral quality as well as physical beauty of each candidate into consideration. 

The jury had the hard labor of selecting a queen from 26 beautiful and talented participants, choosing four finalist, and finally choosing young lady Shairy Berdeja as “Miss Nuestra Comunidad”.

 

The cultural event began with the interpretation of both the American and Mexican national anthem and counted with the participation of the recognized group Diversion, the duet of guitars Fragile and the tenor Franco Cevallos. The animation and presentation of the candidates was very assertive by the beautiful announcer from Telemundo in El Paso, Juarez and New Mexico, Georgina Terrazas. 

The finalists and queen received prizes in cash and scholarships granted by the sponsors and by “Nuestra Comunidad”.

 

Brief biography from 

Miss Nuestra Comunidad:

Miss Nuestra Comunidad Shairy Berdeja, originally from this beautiful city of El Paso, TX. Daughter of Gilberto Berdeja and Lorey de Berdeja. Student at the University of Texas at El Paso and El Paso Community College. Double majoring in communications and education. Counts with fifteen years of experience in the art of classic ballet, and other dance styles like jazz, folklore, hip-hop, Hawaiian, Arab dance among others. With featured presentations in Coopelia, Swan Lake, and The Nutcracker. Proud of being part of the national dance company from the Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez, and flag holder in the escolta General #1. Alumni of William B. High School, with awards from the honor society, dance group AMICI, and theatrical play “Nosotros I,II.”

Currently forming her career in modeling, with special appearances in the first El Paso Fashion Week, Miss El Paso la feria and Miss El Paso Teen. Academically forming part of the honor society Phi Theta Kappa, and the science club. Planning in the future to reach through television to all of your homes, stepping on the stages of Broadway with her talent, and begin her own academy for classic ballet. Thanking primarily God, and all the people  and opportunities that have been presented to her. She believes that the importance of being a good citizen, and conserving her values and the vitality to help. 

Mean while, she enjoys giving food goods to the less fortunate people at low income churches. 

Most essential goal is to dedicate her strength to collaborate, organize and help the community. Also, inform adults and young adults about their rights as citizens, that are key and should be used wisely. Using our voice and making it known in every election. She believes that if every one cooperates with what they can it will be easier to overcome obstacles and reach goals.
